My leap day love story…And cringey high school moment 🙈

Okay, I admit. I was kind of a theater geek in high school. And college. (Okay I still am!!).

But one of those geeky moments led to my first “real” love story – and a gi-normous lesson about love and manifesting that I STILL draw on today…

And it's all about Leap Day!! 🐸

So there I was, cast in the chorus of Li’l Abner and, quite frankly, embarrassed to be there after two years of private voice lessons. But it was my first year in high school, so what can you do? 🤔

I'll spare you the preposterous plot details of this 1950s musical, but I will say that it revolves around a Sadie Hawkins Day race, where young women run to “catch”a man to marry (and the guy has to say yes).

Sadie Hawkins was inspired by the old Irish tradition of Bachelor’s Day, where women were legally only  “allowed” to propose to men on Leap Day.

That's the cringey part 🙈. Talk about a gender-conforming, anti-women's lib situation where women can only reveal their feelings (and only to men) once every four years. 😬

And I was actually in this musical. I'm sorry. 😔

BUT here's the love story part. I was hopelessly crushing on Li’l Abner Yokum, the handsomest guy in Dogpatch, USA, played by one of the handsomest guys at my high school – a junior who I'll call Andrew.

I remember standing offstage and watching mooney-eyed as Andrew crooned his love songs to Daisy Mae, knowing I never, ever have a shot with him…

Until the next year, when my high school did Camelot. By then, the singing diva who was Daisy Mae the previous year had graduated. And well, I guess those voice lessons finally paid off. Because I was cast as Guinevere.

And who was my King Arthur?

Same guy who asked me out a week after the cast list for Camelot went up.

Yep – dreamy Andrew from Li’l Abner.

He became my first real boyfriend and the first one who ever told me “I love you” – and did I ever puppy love him back! 🐶 ❤️

Forever after, I called that my Cinderella year. Not only did I jump from chorus member #17 to the leading role in the musical, but I also got my dream partner – even got to go to the junior/senior prom a year early!

What that year taught me was that change – BIG change – can happen fast, and that life can turn around in the best possible way from one year to the next. 🩷

And let me tell you, I needed that evidence as a grown-up during my long, long years of dry spells and dating the same wrong type over and over again, while I watched all my friends partner up (no Sadie Hawkins race required).

I actually think Andrew was my first sacred partner. We had the same kind of easy, loving connection and flair for romance that I have with Darrin – just high school level. And that boy really saw me. 😊

❤️ Leap Years must be extra lucky for love. Here's what I discovered today:

  • Andrew (my high school BF) and I got together in 1992 – a Leap Year

  • Garrick (my grad school BF) and I got together in 2004 – a Leap Year

  • Darrin (my loving hubby) and I got together in 2016 – a Leap Year (8 years ago yesterday was our first date!)

Yep. The 3 loves of my life all came to me during Leap Years, each one exactly 12 years apart.

All of those leap years required me to take a huge leap of faith – and with partners I would have considered “out of my reach” in the past.

They were also major leaps in my relationship status – they catapulted me from singlehood into happy, committed partnerships with people who really got me, and who I loved being around.

What's my take away from this series of Leap Year love synchronicities?

There is a Divine Order running through my life that I can't see in the present moment – only in hindsight. And it's operating perfectly, without me even helping it along. ✨

I believe that same Divine Order is flowing through your life too, dear one. You may not see it now, within the currents of your own love life.

But I bet if you looked back, you’d discover how the synchronicities have lined up for you too – always in mysterious ways – in multiple areas of your life.

And I'm envisioning that this Leap Year will be your leap of faith year too – and a juicy, mind-blowing, divinely ordained Leap into Love.

Here's how I'm going to help you make that leap. 🐸
